Leah Galo

In the midst of a full-time career, my art serves as a meditation—a refuge that guides me back to myself, fostering curiosity and providing a space for experimentation. This creative outlet offers a sense of accomplishment and pride, a sentiment I believe every artist should embrace without hesitation.

Charcoal has been one of my chosen mediums since 2011, evolving from a more traditional application in my early works to a more experimental approach in recent years. This versatile material, both enjoyable and occasionally frustrating, has become a conduit for my artistic expression. Ink has also played a pivotal role in my artistic journey, transforming my style into a deliberate and unhurried practice. This enduring medium has led me to embrace a meticulous approach, intentionally cultivating a slow, meditative flow in my creative process.

In 2021, a pivotal year for my artistic journey, I introduced genuine gold leaf into my creations, later expanding to incorporate silver and copper leaf. Though trickier to work with due to their oxidation rates, I have embraced the challenge, leaving some pieces unsealed to allow the natural patina to contribute to the evolving palette over time, while sealing others to preserve the original color.

My preference for natural materials aligns seamlessly with the thematic elements of my art, which often explores both terrestrial and extraterrestrial realms. You will notice many themes of sunlight and  exploration  and interplay between light and shadow in my work. Using a loose, intuitive approach, I allow the material to interact with light unpredictably.

Each piece becomes a study in movement and luminosity, a testament to the ever-changing nature of light and its power to evoke wonder. Whether exploring the warmth of the sun or the mysteries beyond, my art invites the viewer to embark on a journey of discovery, encouraging them to see the familiar in a new way.
